La Bella Mano by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1875
Oil on canvas. Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE, USA.

62 x 46 inches
The Pre-Raphaelite Era 1848-1914
Rowland and Betty Elzea, exhibition catalog, 1976

Begun in December 1874 and completed the following July, this painting was done during a time of unusual productivity for Rossetti. In a letter to Dr. Hake he described the painting as being of the “sensuous realistic type.”

The painting was commissioned by Murray Marks and many of the objects in it belonged to Marks. Other objects, such as the mirror and the Indian jewelry, belonged to Rossetti and some of them are now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Alexa Wilding posed for the central figure and May Morris probably posed for the angel holding the tray.

Sometime in the summer of 1875, after the picture was finished apparently, Rossetti wrote a sonnet to accompany it.
